STD's Chart

The PCC W.I.S.H. clinic offers free testing for the following STD's:

Disease Symptoms Incubation Diagnosis Treatment Complications
HIV Short-lived, flu-like symptoms (fatigue, fever, aches). No symptoms with initial infection or for many years thereafter.   Blood test A complex regimen of medicine taken consistently can prolong life, but not cure the disease. AIDS typically appears about 10 years after the initial HIV infection (although new therapies may further delay the development of AIDS).
Hepatitis B 30% of infected people have no signs or symptoms. Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), severe fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Rash, joint pain and fever may also occur.   Blood test Drug therapies May cause lifelong infections that could cause liver failure, cancer and death.
Syphilis:
"syph", "pox", "bad blood"
1st Stage: painless pimple or sore on genitals, fingers, lips, breast 2nd stage: rash, sores, swollen joints, flu-like illness Latent stage: none 10-90 days Blood test Antibiotics for patient, all sexual contacts and possibly infected offspring. Brain damage, insanity, paralysis, heart disease, death; damage to skin, bones, eyes, liver, teeth of fetus and newborns.
Gonorrhea:
"dose", "clap", "drip"
Local, genital discharge, pain; often no symptoms in men; usually none in women. 1-30 days Swab test for women and men Antibiotics for patient and all sexual contacts; follow-up test for "cure" Pelvic inflammatory disease, sterility, arthritis, blindness, eye infection in newborns
Chlamydia Clear discharge, frequent urination; often no symptoms 5-10 days or longer Swab test Antibiotics Permanent damage to reproductive organs, sterility, ectopic or tubal pregnancy or potentially fatal eye and lung infections in babies.

Candidiasis:
"yeast infection" or VVC a common fungal infection that occurs when there is overgrowth of the fungus called Candida.
Women: genital itching or burning, with or without a "cottage cheese-like"vaginal discharge. Men: itchy rash on the penis   Swab Antifungal drugs taken orally, applied directly to the affected area, or used vaginally
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is the name of a condition in women where the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted and replaced by an overgrowth of certain bacteria. It is sometimes accompanied by discharge, odor, pain, itching, or burning. Abnormal white or gray vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor; burning during urination or itching around the outside of the vagina, or both. Some women have no symptoms at all.   Visual exam and swab Antibiotics Can increase a woman's susceptibility to HIV and other STDs, such as Chlamydia and gonorrhea; pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) following surgical procedures such as a hysterectomy or an abortion. While pregnant it may put a woman at increased risk for some complications of pregnancy.
Herpes:
"virus"
Swollen, tender, painful sores on genitals 30 hours to 2 weeks Visual examination done at WISH--pap smears are also common. There is no cure for genital herpes. Treatment with anti-viral medications like Acyclovir reduces the duration and intensity of symptoms. Possible evidence linking infection to cervical cancer, severe central nervous system damage or death in infants infected during birth.
HPV:

"genital warts"

Local irritation, itching. Most patients have no symptoms. Approximately 1% of all individuals who have been infected with HPV and 7% of those with current HPV infection have genital warts. 30 or more days Visual examination Liquid nitrogen, podophyllin tincture or surgical removal. HPV infection is not curable, although most HPV infections resolve spontaneously. Even if warts do resolve, infection may remain, and can still be passed on to a future sexual partner. In addition, warts frequently recur in the months following symptoms. Highly contagious; can spread enough to block vaginal and rectal openings.
