In October, 1984, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Langhofer of Wichita joined forces with Family Life Services of Arkansas City to form a pregnancy crisis center in Wichita. After gathering a number of concerned pastors and lay people to help establish and support the ministry, an office was opened at 2645 West Douglas in May, 1985. In November, 1985, the Pregnancy Crisis Center of Wichita, Inc. became a reality!
The original 650 square foot office was quickly outgrown, and in 1988 the PCC moved to its current location at 1040 North West Street. We now have 4,500 square feet teeming with activity. Since opening our doors in 1985, we have gone from 21 client services each month to 300!
In 1989, the PCC affiliated with Care Net (formerly the Christian Action Council), joining 500 other pregnancy help centers across the country. In 1997, the PCC affiliated with Heartbeat International. This association provides credibility and accountability along with quality training and development. In 1999, in preparation for adding limited medical services, ultrasound and Doppler, the Center joined NIFLA, the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates.
During the 2003 calendar year, seventy-five percent of the women served at the Pregnancy Crisis Center of Wichita, Inc. were between the ages of 15 and 25. These clients served are primarily sexually active single women at high risk to contract a sexually transmitted disease or infection. In July, 2003, the Board of Directors approved a plan for enhancing Center services to include STD/STI testing, treatment and therapy. In January 2005, Wichita Initiative for Sexual Health (W.I.S.H.) officially opened and began serving PCC clients by offering free sexually transmitted disease testing, treatment and therapy.
There are countless volunteers to thank for their tireless efforts and energy given selflessly to the mission of the Center, but ultimately we give our Heavenly Father all the praise and glory for allowing us to serve Him and His children through this ministry.
